Turritella is earthy brown and usually has colored spots, eye markings, bands, stripes or fossilized inclusions. Turritella is easily recognized by the fossilized patterns of snails and sea creatures in the stone. About 50 million years ago, mud fell from the mountains onto the shells at the bottom of mountain streams and the shells fossilized. The term Turritella comes from the assumption that the fossilized snails were of the genus Turritella, the snails fossilized in Turritella were actually Elimia tenera, but the name Turritella was retained.
