Topaz is one of the oldest known minerals in the world, dating back to 3000 BC. According to the legend, it was found by shipwrecked pirates on the island of Cytis in the Red Sea and that is where it got its name - in Arabic topazas means "they searched and found".

Topaz is an aluminosilicate fluoride hydroxide mineral that crystallizes as prismatic crystals. Topaz is the hardest silicate mineral ever discovered and maintains an 8 on the Mohs scale. Namibian Topazes are slightly different from other species. They are characterized by high gloss and silvery shade. This species contains inclusions or enclosures of other minerals in its structure, which sometimes give it a brownish to reddish hue.
