Shungite is a carbon-based stone that was first discovered in the village of Shun'ga in the Republic of Karelia (northern region of Russia). Named after the village in which it was discovered, this mineraloid was first described in 1879 and contains more than 98% carbon. Although shungite is mainly found in Russia, it has also been found in Austria, Congo, India and the United States.

Shungite is the only mineral on Earth that contains therapeutic fullerenes. Karelian shungite is deposited in the oldest layers of the Earth's crust, which is more than 2 billion years old. Its cosmic origin is very likely due to its high concentration of fullerenes, as similar extraterrestrial fullerenes have also been found in meteorites.
