Sapphire is a variety of corundum. The stone was named "Sapphirus", meaning "blue stone" in reference to the color of the mineral. Although sapphire was reported in 1747, it has been traced to its use by the Etruscans 2,500 years ago. Sapphire was also considered a stone of royalty by ancient Rome, Greek and Egyptian civilizations. Sapphire is traditionally considered dark blue, but comes in a variety of colors such as blue, purple, white, pink, yellow, black, green and orange. Each color pigment is caused by a different metal found in sapphire.
