Dendritic opal is a form of ordinary opal (although it doesn't have the color-changing flash and flare of a precious opal). The stone is also quite common, occurring naturally all over the world. Most dendritic opal stones have a base of opaque milky white. But this clear background is broken up by high contrast inclusions of manganese and iron. The inclusions are sporadic, resulting in an impression that looks like a tree. The miners found it in Australia, the Opal Capital of the World! It wasn't long before other mines were discovered around the world.
