Kambaba jasper, also known as Kambaba stone or green stromatolite jasper, is an extremely old stone dating back 3 billion years. Cambrian jasper is not actually jasper, but rather a fossil. This stone is classified as a stromatolite, which refers to the cluster of fossilized algae that formed this mineral. One of the special fossils in Kambaba Jasper is actually a cyanobacteria, which is believed to have helped create the first oxygen atmosphere here on Earth many centuries ago. Other minerals in this special combination of stones are usually quartz, feldspar, cristobalite and albite. Cambrian jasper is relatively rare (which adds to the appeal for many people). It is found only in South Africa, Madagascar and in the sea that divides the two landmasses.
