Iolite is a gem variety of cordierite, a cyclosilicate mineral of magnesium and aluminium named after the French geologist Cordier. As with some other blue gemstones, iolite is known for its pleochroic properties. Pleochroism is an optical phenomenon where the gemstone appears as different colors depending on the angle and light source. Polarized light in particular displays the pleochroism of iolite. From a deep blue to a purple hue, the deeper the color, the more valuable the iolite gemstone.
