Product detailed description
Garnet tower with arfvedsonite
Size: 8,4cm x 2,2cm
Garnet is a silicate group of minerals that was first recorded in 325 BC by Theophrastus. The word Garnet comes from Gernet, meaning "dark red" and the word "Granatus" means grain or seed, in reference to its resemblance to the pomegranate. Traditionally, the Garnet mineral group consists of 6 subminerals: Almandine, Pyrope, Spessartine, Andradite, Grossular and Uvaroite. Garnet deposits can be found all over the world with large specimens coming from the United States.
Arfvedsonite is a rare sodium amphibole mineral that crystallizes as large masses, small prismatic shards and fan-shaped prisms. It was officially discovered by humans in 1823. The stone was found by the late Swedish chemist Johan August Arfwedson, after whom the eye-catching mineral is named. Arfvedsonite goes through a long and complex formation process to become the powerful crystal we know today. They form in plutonic rock, which is igneous rock that slowly solidifies and ends up crystallising from volcanic magma. Arfvedsonite grows inside this slowly forming rock, adding millions of years to its evolutionary cycle.
