Contrary to its name, moss agate is not actually agate, rather it is chalcedony with dendritic inclusions of manganese, chromium and/or iron. The impurities inside resemble moss and other various patterns, leading one to believe that true organic matter is enclosed within. The rich colors and vibrant patterns are simply due to the varying levels of oxidation of the crystals within. These colors are most often green or brown, but can also be seen in yellow, red and black.
