Mineralogically speaking, grape agate is not agate and is actually a botryoidal purple chalcedony that was recently discovered in Indonesia. Grape agate entered the mineral market in 2016. Its popularity quickly spread through mineral shows, websites and online marketplaces. the "grapes" of these specimens are tiny. Their diameter varies between two and eight millimeters. Only one locality has been found so far, making it an extremely rare and valuable stone. Colours range from dark purple to light lilac or lavender. Very rarely are green colored specimens found amongst purple veins and even bicolored green and purple pieces have been found! They are among the rarest because they are truly the definition of "grape agate".
